Mr. Matthew has shown locally in galleries such as the Woodside/Braseth gallery and the Hartness/Shoos galleries in Seattle, the Harbor Gallery in Gig Harbor, and the Left Bank gallery in Laguna Beach CA.. He is a graduate of Fine Arts at Washington State University in 1978, with further education at the Evergreen State College in printmaking in 1984, and computer graphics courses at Bellevue Community College in 1998. Artists that he has studied under include; Bill Mair, Alden Mason, Gaylon Hanson, Ned Mueller, Lowry Gold, Andrew Hoffmeister, Joyce Motty, and John Amendola. He is a member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest artists, and the Oil Painters of America. Currently he displays his work at Eclectically Washington in Aberdeen,WA. And at various art shows throughout the Northwest. He also designs and manufactures custom made canvases for prominent artists in the Seattle area.

Jim draws his inspiration from the interplay of light and shade and color present in a wide variety of subject matter, from seascapes, and landscapes, to cityscapes and figurative studies of people in various locations, primarily market scenes from the Seattle Pike place market. He is presently involved with a series of paintings involving Market scenes, which contain the required compositional elements for his complex use of shapes and colors. He approaches representational composition from a background in abstract and surrealistic art and with a color palette that tends to be impressionistic in influence. Many years spent living on the Quinault Indian reservation has also influenced his deep regard for nature and the natural beauty found around Washington’s coastal areas.
