Bryn Barnard
I was raised in La Mirada and Laguna Beach, California. My mother Elaine is a playwright and actress. My father Ernie was an aerospace engineer. An AFS exchange student year in Malaysia led me to the University of California, Berkeley, where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa in studio art and Asian studies. Afterwards, I attended Art Center, and honed my illustration and design skills.
My AFS year led to many subsequent adventures in Southeast Asia: I was a member of a Malaysian shadow puppet theater troupe. I worked in batik ateliers in Malaysia and Java. I climbed volcanoes, trekked in jungles and dived in coral reefs. As a fellow of the Institute of Current World Affairs, I studied the Southeast Asian advertising industry and later, as a creative consultant, I worked at several Southeast Asian ad agencies. As a Fulbright fellow, I taught at Universiti Sains Malaysia, in Penang. I retain strong connections to Southeast Asia.
I started illustrating in 1984. Most of my images are painted in oil on panel. I also work digitally, mostly in Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark, particularly in the creation of maps. My work has appeared on the covers of the Far Eastern Economic Review, Asiaweek, Spider, Worldwatch and Fantasy and Science Fiction, in the pages of the New York Times, Roll Call, National Geographic and Scientific American, on the covers of sci-fi paperbacks, in advertisments for apples, tomato sauce, cars and cognac, and in many books for children. My paintings have been shown at both Kennedy and Stennis Space Centers, where my paintings are part of NASA's permanent collection.
Profiles of my work and career have appeared in Time, Step-by-Step Graphics, International Artist, International Studio, the Christian Science Monitor, the Malaysian Tatler and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
I have a strong commitment to education. Besides guest lectures at numerous educational institutions I have taught at Skagit Valley College, Washington; University of Delaware, Newark; University of the Arts, Philadelphia ; Hussian School of Art, Philadelphia; and University of Pittsburgh's Institute for Shipboard Education. I've spoken at several Elderhostels. As a consultant for Universities Field Staff International, I lectured at college and university campuses across the United States.
I now live in Friday Harbor, Washington with my wife Rebecca - a writer, designer, and color consultant and two children, Wynn and Parks.
